Amir Kassam is a Professor in the School of Agriculture, Policy and Development at the University of Reading (UK) and an advisor on sustainable agriculture intensification with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). He is the Moderator of FAO-hosted Global Platform for Conservation Agriculture Community of Practice (CA-CoP). He was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Honours List in 2005 for services to tropical agriculture and to rural development. Kassam is also: Convener of the Land Husbandry Group of the Tropical Agriculture Association (TAA-UK); Honorary Member of the European Conservation Agriculture Federation (ECAF); Member of the Conservation Agriculture Association for the United Kingdom (CA-UK); Member of the Board of the Asian Center of Innovation for Sustainable Agriculture Intensification (ACISAI), Asia Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand; Member of the Steering Committee of the Platform for Agrobiodiversity Research at Bioversity International, Rome; Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, London; and Associate Editor of the Journal of Irrigation Science, Springer. Kassam’s previous positions include: Deputy Director General for Programmes at WARDA (Africa Rice Centre), Cote d’Ivoire; Chairman of the Aga Khan Foundation (UK); Chairman of FOCUS Humanitarian Assistance Europe Foundation; and Chairman of TAA-UK. During his career Kassam has worked in Africa, Asia and Latin America with national research and development systems, with CGIAR Centres, with FAO and other UN institutions, and with NGOs in the fields of sustainable production intensification and land management, natural resource management, land resources evaluation for development planning, rural development and humanitarian assistance.
